If you’re planning a holiday to the Middle East or another sandy environment, you may ask yourself, ‘What should I wear in the desert?’ Having recently returned from my own trips to Egypt, Jordan and Israel, I’ve got some valuable insights to share on the best desert clothes to wear while you travel.
When packing for the desert, it goes without saying that it’s important to dress appropriately to stay cool and protected from the heat and sun. But you’ll want to pick desert clothes that offer both comfort and style, and it can be hard to know where to start.
In this post, I’ll guide you through the essentials and offer advice on choosing the perfect desert wardrobe. So let’s start with the essentials…
Sun Hat
Packing a sun hat for the desert is absolutely essential for shielding yourself from the sun. Obviously, hats can protect your face and neck from sunburn, but another benefit is that the shade from a wide brim can help you regulate your body temperature in the extreme desert heat.
You’ll be spoilt for choice with a wide variety of styles and types to choose from. Wide-brimmed straw hats and fedoras offer increased sun protection but are also a great prop in those all-important photos. Alternatively, consider a lightweight and breathable bucket hat or a packable sun hat with built-in UV protection, which can be easily folded and stored in your backpack when you don’t need it.
Here are just a few of my favourite women’s sun hats to wear in the desert:
- Fat Face Fedora Hat – Stay sun-smart in the desert with the iconic straw fedora. Crafted from 100% straw, this classic hat features a vibrant band that adds a stylish touch to any outfit, making it a must-have accessory for your desert adventures.

Skirts & Dresses
Wearing skirts and dresses in the desert is a great way to keep cool in arid climates, particularly if you choose flowy styles and lightweight fabrics. Trust me – you’ll be very grateful for the airflow and ease of movement, but also the effortless style offered by maxi skirts and midi dresses, so make sure you pack a few!
When it comes to choosing dresses, pick cotton or linen styles that allow your skin to breathe. Consider packable and wrinkle-resistant options that are easy to carry and maintain, but also look for designs with elastic waistbands for added comfort.
Here are my favourite skirts:

Trousers
Including trousers on your desert packing list is a must. Not only do they offer protection against harsh terrain, but also an additional layer of defence against the heat and harmful rays of the sun.
Much like when choosing dresses, the best trousers for the desert are lightweight and quick-drying materials like nylon or synthetic blends. Loose-fitting styles such as cargo pants or hiking trousers provide comfort and freedom of movement, while those with zip-off legs can easily transform into shorts if you get too hot.
These are my favourite trousers to add to your desert packing list for women:

With their shirred waist, convenient side pockets and wide floaty legs, these pants are not only fashionable but also made from eco-friendly materials, ensuring both style and sustainability in your wardrobe.

T-shirts
T-shirts provide a versatile and easy-to-layer option, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day in the desert. So make sure you’ve got at least a few t-shirts on your packing pile.
As always, prioritise lightweight and moisture-wicking fabrics, such as polyester or organic cotton, and loose or relaxed fit styles to promote better air circulation and comfort. Lastly, consider packing t-shirts in light colours to reflect sunlight and help you stay cooler.
Here are just a few of my favourite women’s t-shirts:
- Fat Face Organic Cotton Ivy T-shirt – Stay comfortable and stylish during your desert adventures with this ultra-soft organic cotton t-shirt. This ensures maximum comfort and protection against biting insects, making it an ideal choice for outdoor adventures in the desert.
Shirts & blouses
Lightweight shirts and blouses offer coverage against the sun’s rays, protecting your shoulders and arms from sunburn. But they also allow for easy layering, helping you to adjust to temperature changes throughout the day, from the heat of the day to the cool of the night.
Pick long-sleeved options for extra sun protection and defence against insect bites, while flowy and loose-fitting styles provide comfort and air circulation. Versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down are your best bet, allowing you to effortlessly transition from daytime adventures to nighttime events.

Light layers
Packing light layers for a trip to the desert is essential for adapting to changing temperatures throughout the day. Light layers also provide flexibility, allowing you to adjust your clothing to find the perfect balance between protection from the sun and your ability to maintain optimal body temperature.
Your best layering friends will be a lightweight cardigan or a breathable long-sleeved shirt that can be easily put on or taken off as needed. Opt for lightweight, packable options that won’t take up much space in your luggage while providing the flexibility you need in the desert.
Here are my top choices for women’s light layers:

Light scarf
A light scarf is another desert essential. Not only can a scarf or shawl shield your neck and face from the sun, protect against dust and sand and provide an extra layer of warmth during chilly desert nights, but it can also add a touch of style and versatility to your outfits.
As with all the desert clothes mentioned in this post, lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or chiffon are best. Consider a larger-sized scarf that can be wrapped around your neck and shoulders, or even used as a head covering for added sun protection and modesty at religious sites. Look for scarves in light colours or with desert-inspired prints to complement your outfits, and choose scarves that are easy to pack and won’t wrinkle easily.
Here are some of my favourite desert scarves:
- Jewel Bloom Scarf – Stay stylish and protected under the sun with this lightweight viscose scarf. Adorned with a stunning jewel bloom print, it adds a touch of elegance to any outfit. Whether worn as a fashionable headscarf or draped over your shoulders, this versatile accessory not only enhances your style but also provides essential sun protection during hot climates, making it a must-have for your desert adventures.

Featuring a soft and delicate floral pattern, it adds a pop of colour to your outfit while offering sun protection. Sandals
Sandals allow your feet to stay cool in the scorching heat and provide comfort during long walks on sandy terrain. Additionally, they are easy to slip on and off, allowing you to quickly adapt to the desert environment, whether it’s walking on hot sand or cooling off your feet in refreshing oasis pools… if you’re lucky enough to find any!
The best desert sandals are the ones with sturdy soles and straps for durability and stability. Look for sandals with adjustable straps or closures to ensure a secure and comfortable fit, especially if you want to wear them on longer hikes or treks. Whether you prefer supportive hiking sandals or stylish open-toe designs, make sure you wear them in properly at home to avoid blisters once you reach the desert.

Comfortable shoes
Taking comfortable shoes with you to the desert is vital for providing proper support, and reducing the risk of blisters and pain during long walks or hikes.
Consider packing a pair of sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes that provide excellent support and protection in desert environments. Opt for breathable and lightweight designs to keep your feet cool and comfortable. Slip-on sneakers or walking shoes with cushioned soles are another great option for comfort when exploring the desert landscape.

Their airy construction makes them an ideal choice for exploring the wonders of the desert, offering both comfort and style as you navigate the arid landscapes.
Sunscreen
If there’s only one thing you buy from this desert packing list, make sure it’s sunscreen. The desert’s reflective surfaces can amplify harmful radiation, making sunscreen an essential defence against sunburn, and the risk of skin damage or skin cancer. Applying and reapplying sunscreen regularly ensures that your skin stays protected throughout your travels. So make sure you take lots of it!

Sunglasses
Including sunglasses in your desert essentials is vital for protecting your eyes from the unforgiving desert sunlight. The bright desert landscape can cause glare and strain, but sunglasses with UV protection shield your eyes from harmful rays and will you to fully enjoy the stunning desert scenery without squinting. All the better to see it with, my dear!

Fan
Make sure you pack a fan to provide a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. A portable fan can help create a cooling breeze and offer instant relief, especially during hot afternoons or when exploring areas with limited shade.
